City Lights

City lights,
from a hotel window
flickering in the night
Street lights that fade out,
and back in to sight

Cars zipping across highways
sleepy drivers at their wheels
Trying to get to nowhere
from nowhere they may be,
just like me

City lights,
from an airplane
soaring in the sky
Giving life to the shadows,
where darkness seems to hide

Shadows ‘neath the street lamps
darkness ‘neath the signs
Neon fucking billboards
broken and vandalised,
by men

City lights,
under the stars
somewhere they may be
watching us in silence
no longer for us to see,
city lights in exchange.
